The purposes of this survey were to investigate the anxiety status of the patients before receiving laparotomy and to identify its influencing factors. A modified anxiety scale and a questionnaire were used for data collection from May. 1,1996 to Jul. 1,1996. A total of 60 patients for laparotomy were included in this study. The major findings of this study are as follows: the emotional changes of the patients who were receive laparotomy before the night were:fear, nervousness and irritability. Significant differences were found among marital status, sex, Previous experience of hospitalization and the were participant's major concern and were positively correlated to there anxiety status, but negatively correlated to age. The results of this study have provided an important information for pre-operative nursing care in anxiety reduction, as well as directions for futher studies.
