Budget shortages and significant annual increases in journal prices (10 ∼ 20 %) have caused a serious problem in decision-making in the selection and deselection of journal subscriptions in most medical libraries. Several methods for selection and deselection of journals are described in the literature, but no complete option suitable for this library (The Medical Library of Veterans General Hospital-Taipei) could be found. The evaluation criteria used for this study are as follow: frequency of journal use; inclusiveness in Index Medicus, Excerpta Medica; standard core journal lists; impact factor of SCI; local availability; annual cost...etc. The results of this study--the Journal Ranking List of this library and the "Decision Module"--are valuable tools that can allow this library, and other medical libraries, to systematically select the core journals and deselect the less useful journals, enabling them to add some more valuable new titles.
