The character " 居 " (chu) occurs 37 times in Shih Ching (The Book of Songs). In most cases, its use and meaning are clear. However, there are some instances in which chu's semantic meaning and syntactic function are difficult to determine, Which have entailed various interpretations and disputes. This article categorizes chu's usage, lists important commentators' different interpretations, and compares and evaluates those interpretations, in order to provide a sond understanding of the character.
