The purpose of this study was to investigate the nutritional supplements usage pattern of cultivate athletes in Republic of China Sports Federation during March to June, 1998. Three hundred and thirty two athletes belonging to nineteen different events filled out the questionnaire. We listed four various frequencies (never use, daily use, sometimes use and others) to four categories of nutritional supplements including vitamins and minerals, protein, health foods and functional drinks in the questionnaire. The nutritional supplements for these four categories were used by 57.0%, 47.7%, 52.0% and 68.1% of subjects, respectively. Most of athletes used vitamin C, multiple vitamins/minerals and calcium in the category of vitamins and minerals. Chicken essence was the most frequent choice in the category of protein. Ginseng was the most frequent choice in the category of health foods. Other health foods such as royal jelly, edible nest of cliff swallows, creatine, Cordyceps Sinesis, lecithin and Ganoderma Lucidum also were used by the athletes. Laohu Yatse and Come Best were the popular functional drinks. Although the nutritional supplements being taken by athletes, the efficacy and influence on exercise performance are unknown. This report will discuss the efficacy and influence of supplements on exercise performance.
