Many cases show that electronic text projects are frequently participated by libraries. They are involved not only in planning but also in collection and administration. However related technical supports about projects are seldom provided by the library. Etext file formats can be categorized into several“families”, such as TeX、PDF、SGML and other image files. By interviewing users and by testing specific software, this study finds that the consideration of Etext format selection lies in the subject domain, user's habits and facilities, convenience of file interpreting, availability of software and format, and the limitations of the publisher. The uniformity of Etext formats means the structuring of basic format standards. It should not put emphasis on unifying a detailed standardization of formats. Actually, there is no need in trying to unify the Etext format neither on the proprietary format nor general on the one, since it is not economical to some extent.
