以往認為,運動員在比賽前15-45分鐘應避免攝又碳水化合物,以防止發生低血糖症,而造成衰竭提早出現,妨礙運動表現。但是,最近幾弗的研究發現,不論賽前何時補充碳水化合物,對運動表現都是有利的。 本文針對運動前攝取碳水化合物對有氧樂無氧運動表現的影響再做一有系統的整理。這些研究顯示,不論在賽前30分鐘、45分鐘、1小時甚至2小時攝取碳水化合物,並不會對有氧性運動造成負面的影響,甚至能提升運動表。而在運動前30-45分鐘補充糖分是使血糖達到最高值的最佳時間。無氧或運動方面,運動表現則無差異,另外,此方面的文獻仍不多。
