縱觀世界音樂人類學學術史,英國與愛爾蘭人類學者介入音樂研究可謂世界先行者,當代此地區音樂人類學研究仍呈現活潑態勢。本地區選擇性研究區域多集中在亞非地區及本土地域,基本呈現為亞洲音樂、非洲音樂、城市音樂人類學及中國音樂研究。當代此地區音樂人類學具有深刻傳播力,在沿襲傳統亞非地區音樂研究之外,同時關注城市亞文化叢研究。在學術方法傾向上,注重將音樂置于人類學寬闊視角與語境之中考量,此為本地區音樂人類學鮮明學術取向。這正承襲英國音樂人類學者布萊金學術觀念,突破納蒂埃純形式主義分析方法,超越對于音樂社會法則分析。重在關注音樂表達與社會表達體系之間的復雜關系,強調音樂是內在結構活動與特定文化形式的綜合體,從文化語境與音樂代碼之關系中來解釋音樂。當代英國與愛爾蘭音樂人類學正顯現此種取向音樂研究態勢,尋求音樂在文化文脈中的打開與闡釋。
