Augustine investigated the image of God( imago Dei) in the human mind from a soteriological perspective and asked people to reform the deformed through their memory, understanding, and love of God. This article examines the history of the Augustinian theory of the image of God in China, and discovers that there were two schools of interpretation. One is the mainstream school, which insists on the traditional Augustinian "memoryunderstanding-love"image; the other is the tributary school, which insists on Thomas Aquinas’ s "mindunderstanding-love"image. From the Ming and Qing dynasties to the Republican period,in the context of Chinese language, culture, and philosophy, both of these schools presented their own ways to restore the image of God’s image through discipline in daily life and through spiritual exercises.
