In The Woman Warrior, Maxine Hong Kingston adopts a transnational perspective to zoom in on Chinese Americans as an ethnic group living between two cultures. With its dialogic structure, the work explores the love-hate relationships that Chinese Americans have forged with both China and America, describing their feelings, dreams, life attitudes and living conditions, as well as a process of ongoing transformation. Interweaving fiction with reality, moreover, Kingston’s narrative juxtaposes the ancestral land and the country of residence as mutual foils to reveal the inner vitality of Chinese Americans.
