人文主義地理學主張通過人的意識、感知和體驗來研究"地方"及人地關系,并把文學中的景觀視為一種主觀體驗的表達。本文以這一概念為導向,考察美國當代印第安作家斯科特·莫馬迪的代表作《日誕之地》中地理景觀的表述。莫馬迪從印第安人體驗的角度,以反差式手法,把印第安傳統部落和美國現代都市分別表現為精神意蘊的中心和腐朽異化的空間,并通過前者所蘊含的精神力量來消解后者所代表的壓制與異化,以保持印第安人的精神和身份平衡,從而在呼吁當代印第安人回歸先祖家園的同時,又給他們指出了一條城市生存的策略。
