課目教育學知識自1986年舒爾曼正式提出以來,激發教學與教師教育領域掀起了一場持續至今的"課目教育學知識研究"浪潮,悄然孕育起了一種新型教學與教師教育的認識論原理。這一認識論原理,主要表現在課目教育學知識研究的功能模型與重要主題之中。功能模型系一種研究性教學與教師教育建構整合模型,以教師知識結構模型、研究性課堂教學建構模型和研究性教師教育建構模型為基礎。重要主題分為課目教育學知識本質研究、課目教育知識應用研究、課目教育學知識評價研究和課目教育學知識發展研究。課目教育學知識研究已經而且仍將對教學與教師教育理論和實踐產生巨大影響。
