Definitions of the concept of communication ethics by Chinese and Western scholars can be roughly divided into broad-sense definitions and narrow-sense ones. In the broad sense, this concept covers all spheres of communication. In the narrow sense, the concept of communication ethics only covers the sphere of communication by media industries, and is often referred to as "media ethics"or "journalism ethics". In sorting out the definitions of this concept,we find that as the concept of ethics originated in the field of journalism, the narrow-sense conception has long dominated the connotations of communication ethics. However,in today’s digital context, the connotations of communication ethics should not only cover traditional journalism ethics, but also citizens’ ethics in their online independent open-access communication to the public, thereby greatly extending the connotations of the concept of communication ethics. With such an extension, professional media ethics and citizens’ ethics in their communication activities together constitute the two cornerstones of the connotations of communication ethics.
