語象敘事被視為藝術表現的一種方式、體裁、隱喻,或文藝理論中一個重要的概念與闡釋工具。該詞在西方有著源遠流長的歷史,其含義也在近兩千年的發展中不斷演變,至今仍未有定論。原因之一是它具有跨藝術、跨媒介和跨學科研究的特征,然其最核心的問題乃是詞語與意象的關系。今天學界對該詞使用值得反思的幾個問題是:這一術語該如何界定?其理論邊界有多大?文學研究中的語象敘事與繪畫藝術等所使用的該詞是否應有區別?語圖之間是什么關系?等等。本文擬從上述幾個方面對西方語象敘事的歷史與現狀、定義與問題做一梳理。
Ekphrasis has been widely used as an expressive mode,a literary genre,a metaphorical notion,or an important concept and analytical tool in literary and art theories.The use of the word"ekphrasis"can be traced back to about 2000 years ago and its definition has undergone many changes in history.Unfortunately,there is still no consensus upon what ekphrasis means.One reason is that it is inter-art,inter-media,and interdisciplinary.The most fundamental question,however,is the relationship between word and image.Questions often posed to the term include:what is its definition and theoretical boundary?Is there a difference between the term when it is used in literature and that used in visual arts?What exactly is the relationship between word and image?This article will focus on these questions and try to give a brief introduction to the past and present,definition,and questions of ekphrasis.
