William Golding proposed in different phases of his writing career to use the word"myth"in description of his novels,a terminological choice that points out the affinities between the novel and myth—the representation of the essentiality and entirety of experience, the demonstration of the attributes of mythic thinking, and the transmission of a priori values.Golding’s conception of the novel as "myth"is vividly manifested in his literary creation and it illuminates the generic significance of the novel, that is,the novel makes possible the representation of experience beyond the knowledge of human reason. It breaks through the limitations of human reason and allows man to cross the cognitive boundary and grasp the entirety of the truth of life.
