This paper takes the materials collected from field research in Ryukyu Islands as its basis, surveys the sources relevant to Shigandang culture in the greater East Asian region, and performs a comprehensive evaluation of the cultural position of Shigandang culture in Ryukyu Islands. The author indicates that historically there has been a long-established influx of Chinese culture to Ryukyu Islands, which sedimented into both material and immaterial local cultural elements.Shigandangculture’s current form of existence in the Ryukyu Islands vividly reflects the process of how Ryukyu Islands developed its own culture under the influence from multiple sources, including China,Japan, the Korean Pennisula, and Southeast Asia, while continuously internalizing the greater East Asian culture into its own. This paper also notes the latest derivatives of Shigandangculture in Ryukyu Islands’contemporary society and considers them as a part of continuous local internalization of Shigandangculture.
