Consumption is the most important philosophical work written by Georges Bataille, as well as the first volume of his philosophical trilogy The Accursed Share. After World War Ⅱ, under the socio-historical conditions of extreme exuberance and poverty, Bataille has presented a new perspective on understanding the world, that is, ‘general economy,’ through his brilliant and passionate writing. Starting from the material basis of the global economy, Bataille has reviewed the development of human society from ‘society of consumption’ to ‘industrial society,’exposed the reality of ‘the sacred world’ covered by ‘the world of things’ of modern capitalism, criticized the narrow logic of selfishness and pursuit of profits, and opened the way to get rid of the enslavement of things and regain the vitality of exuberant life. To this day, the work continues to influence and inspire questions and issues in literature, philosophy and international politics.
