Tagore’s One Hundred Poems of Kabir in English has incurred enourmous response since its first publication. It has been republished repeatedly and translated into many other languages. It won worldwide readership for Kabir, and reoriented the research approach towards Kabir, making Hindi scholars in India accepct and recognize Kabir’s position and contribution in the hisotry of Indian literature. Tagore translated the text on the basis of Kshitimohan Sen’s four-volume Kabir with the help of young Bengali scholar Ajitkumar Chakravarty and British woman writer Evelyn Underhill. Its textual basis mostly originates from the western tradition of Kabirian poems. It inherited the dynamicness of the Kabirian textual tradition, better reflected the contemporary transmission and evolution of Kabirian poems. Therefore, Tagore’s One Hundred Poems of Kabir is a very significant part of the medieval Hindi poet Kabir’s vast poetic textual tradition.
