Philosophy and history are complementary and symbiotic. The historical sense of philosophy reveals the way that philosophy approaches history, while the philosophical nature of history shows the characteristics of history’s approach to philosophy. History serves a variety of functions in philosophy: it is the mode and fundamental characteristic of human existence, the logical starting point of philosophical research, the basic mode in which philosophy looks at things, and the ultimate objective of philosophy in terms of providing a service to society. Meanwhile, philosophy also serves a variety of functions in history: it transcends the accidental in pursuit of universal history, and the local to pursue global history; systematically summarizes the methods of historical research; and treats the historical view as a theoretical framework and macro-level guide. The unity of philosophy and history is based on the principle of the unity of logic and history, and Marx realizes the unity of the two through real-world practice.
