The Hermeneutics of Ancestor Religion
The study is about foreign interpretations of African and Chinese ancestor related practices. Besides rendering their historical contexts, it also endeavors a framework for their critical appraisal. This includes a native re-visitation of interpreted facts and a reconfiguration of the problem. Accordingly, those practices utter the practitioners’ quest for existential meaning, which in ancestor religion, requires the implication and mediation of ancestors.
Some foreigners exposed to African and Chinese ancestor related practices were triggered to understand and explain them. Their efforts for systemic explanations prompted a long hermeneutic process that generated the materials investigated in this study: interpretations, explanations, and theories. For this, we view those practices as constituting a hermeneutic problem, primarily felt and addressed by foreigners questioned by them. Other themes developed in this study result from this prospective as they strive to assess those interpretations through a method combining insights from Nicholas Standaert and Michel Foucault.
This study is a tentative application of hermeneutics to a cross-cultural context. Its inquisitive method enables to identify and ponder on the contributions of foreign and local interpreters for the understanding of ancestor related practices. It also suggests a wider framework for the appraisals of those contributions.
Since those practices are rooted in life and deal with the unfolding of existence, they should be viewed as concrete expressions of the practitioners’ quest for existential meaning. For its fulfillment; inclusion, implication and mediation of the ancestors are required. This perspective does not only focus on the limitations of existing explanations, it also highlights how these can contribute to the hermeneutic symphony of ancestor related practices, displaying how these constitute a religion.
