Creativity is an important ability in design field. Owe to the job of designer is using creative approaches to solve the problems and to fulfill the needs of consumer and user for the ultimate goal. The overall proceeding of design activity and the identifying of design outcome are both related to individual creativity difference and the factors of creativity assessment. How is creativity generated in design field? The main goal of this thesis is to explore the determinants of creativity and to clarify the concepts of creativity for planning design activities or courses. Study 1 was to examine the mediating effect of passion on the relationship between the cognitive style of students and their creative achievement in the design field. The communication competence factor serves as a control variable. A total of 276 design students took part in a questionnaire survey. The estimation results from both the hierarchical regression analysis and structural equation model showed that harmonious passion was positively related to creative achievement, but that obsessive passion was not. Harmonious passion plays a mediating role between innovative cognitive style and creative achievement. Study 2 aimed at comparing raters with different levels of experience (expert versus non-expert raters) using both the Consensual Assessment Technique (CAT) and the product creativity measurement instrument (PCMI) to assess the product creativity of 56 design works based on Taiwan International Student Design Competition works in 2009. The results showed that the use of both non-expert raters and PCMI was an alternative way of enhancing the flexibility of product creativity assessment. This thesis proposes a concept framework and some suggestions based on the results, it is hoped that it can serve as a basis for further study in design creativity.
