This study investigated whether earnings management in the firm with political connection affects firm performance. This study distinguishes political connections in Indonesia context into three, the political relations that from official government, minister, and governor, which are namely government connection, the political relations that from army or police, which are namely military connection, and the political relations that from government and military simultaneously, which are namely mixed connection. The findings provided empirical support that the higher firm performance when the firms have a political connection. Only connections from the government have a positive impact on firm performance. This study also finds that the politically connected companies perform earnings management, especially government connections. The politically connected firms with conducting earning management have lower performance than non-politically connected firms. The effect of government connections with conducting earning management on firm performance is more robust than military connections and mix connections. This study adds investigations to independent board political connection, investigation using percentage political connections, investigation using a two-period presidential era, investigation using non-SOE firms, and investigation using non-utility industry. The results find a robust result that political connections positively impact firm performance. However, the political connections companies with performing earnings management are degrading their performance for their profit goals.
