This study investigates the relationships between a business’s dynamic capability development, industry clusters, and business growth. Applying Constructing Grounded Theory, the study drew results from information observed through a dynamic capability perspective focused on the cultural and creative businesses that formed and operated in industry clusters.
This study interviewed five experts in the first phase, ten experts in the second phase, ten experts in the third phase, and five experts in the discriminate sampling phase. A total of 30 experts were interviewed, and they all made suggestions regarding the interview outlines for the first three phases. After the interviews were coded for analysis, results were placed into the following categories: business dynamic capability development, industry cluster development mechanism (tourism development ability and business growth commonality), and business cultural literacy. The following propositions were developed from the results: 1) having a good resource base can help businesses mitigate risks; 2) industry clusters require an operation mechanism to serve as a foundation for development and act as a catalyst for businesses within the cluster to cultivate their dynamic capabilities and prevent abrupt loss of resources; 3) when observing business growth, the observer must determine if businesses within the industry share a special commonality, and that commonality could be the core of their dynamic capability development and strategy development; 4) a business’s dynamic capability development, industry clusters, and growth are correlated. Businesses will develop different capability-building paths due to differences in growth stages or focuses caused by company conditions; 5) leaders of the industry cluster select businesses for the cluster and design the mechanism of cluster development, ultimately affecting the dynamic capability development of the businesses in the cluster.
Lastly, this study also categorizes clustered businesses’ dynamic capability constructing processes as a way to discover new theories, which can serve as a reference for future policy making and clustered business operators.
