The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of HOBET sexual education course on socialwork students in terms of sexual knowledge, sexual self-awareness, and self-efficacy. This study adopted one-group pretest-posttest design as its research method. 20 social work students from a university in Southern Taiwan who are in their 4th year and have completed their internship were selected as participants through purposive sampling. The study was conducted through a sexuality education workshop where a pretest was conducted before the workshop. After the workshop, a posttest and a qualitative interview were conducted to understand the effectiveness of the sexuality education course. Primary findings include:
1. Significant improvement in sexual knowledge was seen in the participants, particularly in aspects of improving sexual health knowledge, understanding sexual and gender diversity, understanding the need of diverse sexual behavior, recognizing ethical boundaries, and improving knowledge of sexual trauma.
2. Significant improvement in sexual self-awareness was seen in the participants, particularly in increasing self-reflection on the impact of their primary family and life experience, experiencing and respecting sexual and gender diversity, realizing the importance of improving intervention competencies, and acquiring awareness of the impacts of ethical issues.
3. Significant improvement in self-efficacy was seen in the participants, particularly in having increased confidence in intervention, learning to face anxiety induced by desexualization and coping with such anxiety, being able to face their inadequacy in sexual knowledge and taking actions to cope, and learning to utilize resources and forming coping measures.
4. Overall assessment of the teaching process in the workshop showed that most participants agreed with the teaching goals in each unit of the course. The goals are gaining relevant sexual knowledge, changing sexual self-awareness, and having an increased level of confidence in discussing sexuality issues with the client and providing related information.
5. In general, the participants gave high-level recognition to the design of the instructional units of this course. The participants expressed that through the different teaching activity designs, especially case study practice and demonstration on promoting sexual knowledge, and the enhancement of sexual self-awareness and self-efficacy, they no longer fear or neglect when intervening relevant sexuality issues when they practice social work in the future. Most participants believe their confidence in intervening sexuality issues can effectively increase through the training in this course.
