The structure and formation of “Qupai” which include the meanings of literature and music and artistry is the mutual composition of literati and musicians. The structure and formation are crucial components to demonstrate the tension and plot development in “Kunqu” style, essential media in performing and delineating plots, and contain the function of narrating and expressing emotions. The conveying of dialogue as well as performing all derived from the foundation of qupai, the arrangement between important parts and qupai, and how to present dramatic tension of pai-chang are the considerations. Qupai has been developed into various forms, such as danqu, erqu, and duoqulianyong to bring out the emotions and atmosphere, emphasize characters, plots, and the features of stage, and coordinate plots, emotions, and the length of pai-Chang. Using ci-ge as material, the types of combinations which were analyzed and investigated by researcher Shih, Te-Yu are chong-tou, chong-tou bian-zou, zi-mu-diao, dai-guo-qu, za-zhui, qu-zu, tao-shu, he-qiang, he-tao, ji-qu, and fan-tiao. The styles established the theoretical basis and system for qupai.
Due to the eleven qupai styles sorted by researcher Shih, Te-Yu’s previous study, this study focused on the qupai and quti and gave the examples of the eleven qupai styles through the forms of qupai and the variations and applications of quti. Therefore, the qupai consist of musical elements were analyzed and investigated. With the consistency of musical forms and plots, I discussed how the qupai develops and interacts with dramatic tension under certain level, and how the eleven qupai styles complement the practice and application of performance. The logic, artistry, and functions of qupai composition and application of forms are further discussed.
