Uygurs in Changde, Hunan Province have distinctive ethnicity,religious practices and customs. As a result, some young Uygursdo not practice Islam and eat pork, while some practice Islambut also eat pork. As for senior Uygur party cadres, they followIslamic customs without actually practicing religious belief. Therising ethnic consciousness in recent years witnesses higher devotionto religious activities while new meaning given to Islam beginsto tolerate pork eating and de-emphasis religious ritual. Thisresearch note argues that existing academic discourses are unableto explain the seeming irony of religious revival and pork eating.
