本論文首先探查介紹原住民口述文學傳統中具表演性，儀式性及對話性的特徵，繼而窺探自十九世紀末，美國原住民書寫文學相繼冒現以來之發展，書寫文類與口述傳統間之杆格矛盾處，從而自艾倫於《神聖箍環》批評論文集中的批評觀點出發，檢視部落文化與當代文化拉鋸過程中，原住民女作家的表達敘述文化，探討其如何以其獨特的部族美學，在文本敘述上表現其特有的但共通的文化與關懷，足以建構Henry Louis Gates認為可稱之為「傳統」的想像後設文本（imaginary metatex）。討論中將撿選當代美國最受矚目的三位女作家及作品：寶拉．艾倫的《擁有影子的女人》，萊斯麗．席爾柯的《儀式》及露易絲．厄翠琪的《愛情靈藥》和《蹤跡》文本，分別探討來自於兩個不同部族的作家，即隸屬西南部納咕那部族及中西部奇帕瓦部落的原住民女作家，如何融合，彰顯或演練部族口述傳統中具儀式性，神話性的質素如唱頌，歌唱，說故事等於西方寫作文類中，探索現代原住民想望，疏離，失落與困頓處境。
