In March 31 2002, the earthquake occurred in north Taiwan damaged some libraries those had already set some facilities of earthquake-resistance in stacks. Author conducted a survey to find the effectiveness of retrofit of stacks in Taiwan and also investigated the damages of stacks in some libraries suffered in the earthquake in Taipei. Only 20% of library had set down the facilities of earthquake-resistance before the earthquake, and the results of their work were not effective enough during the earthquake. Owing to the shortage of manpower and financial aid, some recoveries have lasted for a year. The damage in stacks revealed that most of earthquake-resistance facilities have not been designed and executed well. Author analyzed and discussed the merits and shortcomings of those facilities used in retrofit in stacks, especially for the local conditions in Taiwan. From the results of analysis, recommendations have been made to the use of top bracing and added spreaders in the frame of stacks. The sway bracing and stacks anchored in slab were not suggested to use in the existed stacks for their performance in joints. Finally, author remained the librarian that the correct arrangement of books in stacks shall be the basic and most important thing in earthquake-resistance in the stacks.
