There are many geomantic legends in Taiwan, especially the legends of the geomantic professor repaying a debt of gratitude or taking vengeance. Two typical legends show that one is, the geomantic professor is supposed to have an influence on the fortune of a family and make them rich. But the family treat him badly; they let him eat stinking mutton. As a result, he revenges and makes the family poor. (I call the text as “the legend of stinking mutton”) The other one depicts that the family is misunderstood by the geomantic professor (The hostess has prepared the geomantic professor for much his favorite food such as chicken viscous of thick solution beforehand, but he doesn’t know that), so he performs some black magic and turns them into the poor. Finally, the geomantic professor finds out the truth, and then retrieve it. (I call the text as “The legend of chicken viscous”) Both of these tow texts have the same subjects: the art of geomancy, trial, and exchange. This paper discusses the exchange process between he geomantic professor and the family in “the legend of stinking mutton and chicken viscus” by using the theory of exchange in sociology. The process of exchange is from “pay, repay to pay again, and repay again”. Through observing the exchanged behavior in geomantic legends, were can comprehend the culture in Taiwan society. This paper explores the geomantic legends in two perspectives. One is about the individual’s mentality: what do the geomantic professor and the family exchange for? Why the geomantic professor is tested by his appetite? How to balance the exchange between each other? And the other is about community system: Why does the geomancy work in the culture of Taiwan? The paper also illuminates the problem of community consciousness when the geomantic followers hint themselves at magic. In addition, it examines how the geomantic legends combine with retribution and acknowledged justice. How are two types of geomantic oral legends produced and spread? The result do represent different meanings of the public mentality.
