This article analysis the "unholy alliance" between the Chinese authorities and the Hong Kong business community, and considers that it has a strong foundation. Chinese leaders respect business interests in the territory; and both parties try to contain the local democratisation process. In view of China's economic development, Hong Kong entrepreneurs accord a rising priority to the China market, good relations with the Chinese authorities become increasingly important. Hong Kong's major business groups have also reached an impressive scale with substantial financial resources, bence they carry considerable weight in the eyes of the Chinese leadership. In the foreseeable future, the above situation will not change significantly. If the Hong Kong government performs well, achieving respectable economic growth and reasonable control of the social contradictions, then the "unholy alliance" will not be severely challenged. If it loses the support of the people, with the economy stagnating and social contradictions exacerbating, then political stability cannot be guaranteed and even the business environment will deteriorate. In the longer term, Chinese leaders cannot refuse to respond to the community's demand for democracy. At the same time, the gap between the rich and the poor has been widening, and the Hong Kong government cannot always protect business interests at the expense of ordinary people.
