Sun Yuanheng孫元衡(1661?-?), also known as xiannan湘南, was born in tongcheng桐城and served as an officer in charge of national defense for Taiwan during the early years of the Qing Dynasty. His four volumes of poetry, known as the Chi Kan Collections赤崁集, is the product of his experiences during this four-year period. This study is divided into four sections: (1) An introduction to his experiences before coming to Taiwan and a discussion of the versions and popularization of this poetry, i.e. Pian Shi Yuan Poetry片石園詩and the Chi Kan Collections; (2) Sun’s poetic creation between his private and public lives;(3) His state of mind before coming to Taiwan, such as his fear, and, after settling down, the comfort of his life in Taiwan, all recorded in his Chi Kan Collections; and (4) the poetry praising Taiwan and his love for the island.
