Government-business relationships do not necessarily carry negative connotations as far as national development is concerned. This commentary aims at examining the nature of government-business relationships in the development process of advanced countries. The author argues that government-business relationships have played critical roles in the ventures of systematic and large scale economic development projects commonly pursued by advanced countries. Then, the pattern of government-business relationships in Taiwan is compared. Questions related to its implications for political, economic, and social development in Taiwan are also raised.
