檢驗現代化犯罪理論的研究通常將犯罪區別爲暴力犯罪與財產犯罪。以此概念爲基礎，涂爾幹學派建構了古典現代化過程中，犯罪趨勢以及發展規律的解釋。然而，本文認爲此一分類概念未能捕捉到急遽的社會變遷，以及現代化過程中犯罪趨勢的主要本質。本研究以中國員警和檢察院的年度統計，重新檢視新的犯罪分類概念：經濟犯罪與非經濟犯罪。這是一種以經濟動機理論爲基礎的分類架構。分析結果支持本文提出之新分類架構，且證明更能反映中國社會快速現代化過程的犯罪趨勢本質。
