This text aims to explain the historical background and principles behind gender mainstreaming, which is also used to review the six action policies of Taiwan’s 2004 Women’s Policy Guideline: (1)political participation of women; (2)labor and economy of women; (3)welfare and poverty reduction of women; (4) education and culture of women; (5) healthcare and medicine of women; (6) local practice of personal safety women. In turn, the experience derived from participating in the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW) shall be used to discuss contemporary trends of gender mainstreaming worldwide, as well as the possibility of gearing towards international standards while gender mainstreaming is being implemented locally.
