At the early stage of colonial Taiwan, the Governor-General of Taiwan shift the focus of land survey to aboriginal land after finishing the work of plain areas. The "1/50,000 Aboriginal Topographic maps", surveyed from1908 to1916, present the first detailed topographic investigation on mountain areas in Taiwan with valuable spatial records such as mountain roads, settlement positions and the aboriginal boundaries. However, due to the uncompleted mapping and survey reports and the insufficient of the map collection comparison, we may easily find the metadata mistakes or misunderstanding of the map versions in the library. This study first introduces the current archives of these maps among the domestic and overseas map collection units. By comparing all the versions of these maps with an investigation of historical materials, we clarify the producing context of this set of topographic map. Furthermore, the result reveals that beyond the formal published 68 maps, there are another 45 map sheets exist in three additional versions. The efforts of this study not only become an important reference for further digital archive's works, but also provide useful guiding maps for the study of central mountains' areas in Taiwan.
