Taiwan has become an aged society in 2018 as the population aged
sixty-five and older account for 14% of the total population. In 2017, the
long-term care 2.0 policy was promulgated to provide care services to
prevent and delay disabilities. However, this policy lacks protocols to
satisfy mental health and self-worth needs. In this study, we examined an
innovative service protocol of “Our Life Journey--Community-based
Elderly Group Life Storybook” using the design of art and life story writing
activities. This benefited the meaning of life and loneliness in older adults.
Six sessions of 2-hour activities were conducted once a week in a
community care center in Taoyuan. Twenty-six older adults participated in
the activities, six were lost in follow-up, and the absence rate was 23%.
To measure the effects of the service protocol, the “meaning of life
and loneliness” scale was used in the current study, and the results before
and after the activity were compared in a t-test. Only the response for “My
dreams were all achieved” showed a significant difference with a higher
post-test score, indicating a substantial improvement in older adults. No
significant differences were found in other items (p>0.05). The group
activity feedback form revealed high satisfaction, showing that the protocol
has sound effects. The preliminary life storybook template can be used to
create life storybooks.
