The focus of this thesis is on Ch’iu Chün’s (1421-1495) Ta-hsueh yenyen-i pu (大學衍義補), which is an important work on Chinese statecraft and a valuable text on the administration of society and salvation of the masses (經世濟民), The contents of this is work explains Ch’iu Chun’s views on government, and also presents the ideas of good government in the 15th century. The compilation of the Ta-hsueh yen-i pu was meant to elaborate on the last two points of the “Eight Items” (八條目) stated in The Great Learning (大學) - the “ordering of the state” (治國) and “pacification of the world” (平天下). Chapter one traces the framework and characteristics of the Tahsueh yen-i pu and the intellectual trends of the mid-Ming dynasty as a background for the compilation of this work. In his compilation, Ch’iu Chun interprets the “Eight Items” of The Great Learning as aspects of “Substance” (體) and “Function” (用); “Principle” (理) and “Things” (事); “Knowledge” (知) and “Deed” (行). Chapter two discusses the theoretical system of the Ta-hsueh yen-i pu as a system comprised of six concepts, which are the problems of “Human nature” (人性), “Righteousness” (義), “Benefit”(利), “Sageliness within and Kingliness without” (內聖外王), “Sovereign” (君主), and “the common people” (見). Through analysis of these concepts we can gain a better understanding of the characteristics of Ch’iu Chun’s political thought.
