This article is concerned primarily with the progress of Information Science in Mainland China during the last tenyears. It consists of three parts, the first of which explainsthe history of Information Science and its origins; the second of which explains its development in Mainland China, and the third a conclusion. Presently, Information Science is given equal importance with Library Science. It has becomeincreasingly specialized into separate branches, such as: informetrics, inforeconomics, inforpsychology, etc. In conclusion, the author made several proposals concerning the future development of this field: the need to strengthen theoretical research, information policy and regulationsresearch, professional researcher education and training, andto promote communication and coordination between researchgroups and institutions.
