　　　　　臺灣地區65歲以上人口的成長速度顯著增加，預估未來的10到15年，將會超過全部人口的10，而老年期的精神疾病將會是一個重要的課題。本文回顧國內外有關老年期憂鬱性疾病的情況，並從流行病學、病因學、及診斷的困境和治療方面的進展來加以探討。不同的研究方法及工具，所獲致的結果差異性很大，因此在做比較和解釋時需特別小心。綜合前述分析，本文最後討論了有關台灣地區老人皆療保健與老年期憂鬱性疾病之治療與預防策略。
