Thirty years ago, Jeese H.Shera advocated an epistemologicalfoundation for
librarianship, he calledit social epistemology. Now we call it,Sociology of Knowledge,
a disciplinewhich focus on knowledge creation,dissemination and utilization. This
article explores the content of the sociology of knowledge and its relation tolibrary
and information science. Institute of Information Scientists' Criteriafor Information
Science, a guide tosubject areas which can be included inthe instruction of
information science,is identified to prove that the knowledge of knowledge is the
basic intellectual foundation for librarian andinformation specialist.
