Currently there are three different written forms in teaching SouthernMin dialect, namely Chinese characters, Missionary Romanization andChinese Phonetic Symbols. Advantages and disadvantages of the threeforms are discussed by illustration. The form of Chinese charactersis considered as the most advantageous to associate the teachingof Mandarin with that of the dialect. The other forms are suggestedto be supplementary. However, it is desirable to establish a standardphonetic system and prepare suitable textbooks in the dialect for bothnative and non-native speakers.
