　　　　　本文將檢視＜童戲＞("The Mime of Mick, Nick and the Maggies")中的愛爾蘭情境和文本政治。這一章以「天使和魔鬼」（或作「猜色」）遊戲為架構。筆者認為這場遊戲除了模擬成人求愛和婚姻的習俗之外，也複製ＨＣＥ的家庭紛爭，更進一步重現愛爾蘭失根的始末。而在喬氏的愛爾蘭書寫中，時間不連貫，人物和語言也成為浮動的意符，其結果是本地人變成異族客，母語變成外國語。喬氏如此呈現愛爾蘭文化失根，容或遭致醜化祖國之譏，筆者卻認為這種做法，其實也算是愛爾蘭民族主義的產品。因為喬氏在呈現族人嚮往已失去或不可顯現的根之時，也同時暴露民族主義思維中統合的問題。這種欲望的困境，和＜童戲＞中扮演待嫁小新娘的依索(Izod)所面臨的難題類似。身著淡紫色(heliotrope)底褲的她，苦於扮魔鬼的葛拉格(Glugg)屢猜不中顏色，落得抑鬱寡歡，一如太陽花(heliotrope) 般地癡戀意中人。她的分身彩虹女孩(the rainbow girls) 雖以雙重言說(double talk) 提示葛拉格，卻不得要領，不過也因此顯示依索所癡戀的對象，其實既是天使也是魔鬼。換言之，她欲望的目標是不可能顯現的，一如愛爾蘭既已失根，就不可能再現於任何書寫。如此一來，這場遊戲可視為喬依斯書寫愛爾蘭的遊戲，而依索的困境形同喬氏身陷遊戲的焦慮。透過依索對愛情不可能順遂的欲望，喬氏檢視自己試圖召回失根愛爾蘭的欲望。

　　　　　In its mimicry of adult customs of courtship and marriage, the game in "The Mime of Mick, Nick and the Maggies" reproduces HCE's family imbroglio, which in turn epitomizes Ireland's originary loss-presented through a chain of displacement of time, space and identity-stemming from betrayal and transgression, and her subsequent fall to hybridisation. With this Joyce poses the problem of totalization characteristic of the metaphysics of nationalism by staging the colonial subject's desire for a lost or impossible presence of the absent origin. This desire is expressed through the rainbow girls' circumlocutory articulation of Izod's thwarted longing for the other whose identity resists totalization, and who is blind to her desire. Embedding frustrations in playfulness, the children's game can thus be understood as a metaphor of Joyce's play with language to represent an Edenic Ireland which is perpetually lost.
