"Xianggang ganhuai" (Reflections on Hong Kong), a sequence of ten poems in liishi (regulated verse) form written by Huang Zunxian (1848-1905) in 1870, draws its source material mainly from "Xianggang luelun" (Hong Kong: A Sketchy Discussion), an essay written by Wang Tao (1828-1897) between 1865 and 1866. A close comparison of the two works reveal how Huang tailored Wang's essay to suit his poems and how this attempt led to the formation of one of Huang's major theories of poem writing as proposed in "Renjing lu shicao zixu (Author's Preface to the Poems of Renjing Lu) in 1891. This article also interprets and elucidates the meaning of some lines in Huang's poem-sequence in the light of Wang's essay which is usually neglected by commentators of Huang's poetry.
