Mongolia was a satellite state in the Soviet bloc before the collapse of the former Soviet Union. Under communists rule, Mongolia followed the Soviet pattern of development in terms of politics, economics, society and culture. It was only with the 1990 democratization movement that Mongolia obtained its ture independence. Nationalist sentiment has predominated in Mongolia since then. This paper investigates the phenomenon of nationalism in Mongolia, including the Mongolian people's efforts to restore traditional religious beliefs, implement language reform, and rehabilitate the cult of Chinggis Khan.
