This paper concerns the survey of the distribution of Chinese dialects in 630 villages in the New Territories before urbanization. The survey was conducted in three ways--by telephone, questionnaires and field interviews. The 630 villages in the New Territories were primarily divided into 359 Hakka villages (about 57%); 167 Wai Tau villages (about 26.5%); 33 Tan Ka villages which were mainly occupied by fishermen (about 5.2%); 5 Fuk Lou villages which were occupied solely by fishermen (about 0.8%) and 66 mixed villages (about 10.5%). This paper uses the dialects spoken in Sheung Yeung village and Siu Hang village as a sample of the Hakka dialects, and uses the dialects spoken in Tsing Tsuen Wai in Tuen Mun and in Sheung Shui as a sample of Wai Tau dialects. The dialect spoken in Sha Tau Kok Sun Chuen is used as a sample of Fuk Lou dialects. This paper introduces these three outstanding dialects, their phonetic system and special characteristics. It also depicts different kinds of vocabulary used in the New Territories. This paper also attempts to further research and survey dialects in the New Territories.
