As a kind of living cultural heritage, traditional villages carry extremely rich historical memory, cultural ecology, architectural aesthetics, and social development track. With China carrying for ward beautiful and featured small town construction, more and more attention is paid to traditional villages. According to the statistical analysis of research on China’s traditional villages, studies related to traditional villages in China can be roughly divided into three stages: the initial period(before 1996), with predominantly descriptive research; the development stage(1996 – 2005), with research expanding methodologies and depth; the active stage(after 2005), with the coexistence of the soft environment, such as local identity and organizational behavior, and traditional research subjects. From the viewpoint of the research content system, the studies mainly include the value of traditional villages, cultural landscape, public space, space form, protection and development, etc. Compared to the latest international research results, Chinese traditional village studies can be conducted from the following four aspects: research scale transformed from a case study to a comparative study on several cases in the region; research objects transformed from the material space of traditional villages to the interaction between traditional villages and human beings; research field transformed from the microscopic analysis of the spatial form of traditional villages to the structure analysis and developing and best using traditional villages; research methodology to lay more emphasis on the applications of multidisciplinary and new methods.
