《維萊特》的女主人公露西·斯諾是在孤獨的境遇中、不利的社會環境下仍然堅持就業、堅持自我教育的新女性形象。夏洛蒂·勃朗特的這篇小說,貌似描寫浪漫愛情,其實是探索女人在維多利亞時代沒有愛情怎么辦。露西的選擇非常不易,因為她是一個邊緣人,而且是集老小姐、自食其力者和文藝女青年三重身份為一體的邊緣人。文章從討論露西的多重邊緣身份入手,分析露西如何通過職業的發展和藝術的凝視,來反抗被壓制、被禁錮、被邊緣化的命運,塑造新型的女性自我,創建新的欲望語言。

Lucy Snowe,the heroine in Villette,is a new woman who persistently seeks self-education and self-support under lonely and unfavorable circumstances.The novel,in the form of romantic love story,actually tells what a woman without love should do in the Victorian age.Yet,Lucy’s choice is very hard to make,for as a spinster,a wage earner,apotent artist,she is cornered to the marginal place of the society.Beginning with a discussion of Lucy’s multiple layers of marginality,the paper intends to reveal how Lucy fights against her fate,forges a new type of female self and creates a new language of desire through professional development and artistic gaze.
