In the development of Japanese literature, one of the characteristics of Syoua times was the woman literature began blossoming. From the end of Taisyou times till the early Syoua times(before the end of the second world war), some brilliant woman literature writers appeared gradually. Evaluating the quality as well as the quantity of those authors’ works, we could say Ssetoutiharumi is the most prominent of all.
In Syoua 32, Ssetoutiharumi first published her novel which concerning about lesbian, and astonished the society. After that, she published series of articles revealing feminisms strongly and got the title of “womb writer” which made her become the advocate of woman’s feminisms during those times.
Experiencing her grand passion in love, marriage, fornication, and her religious ascesis, Ssetoutiharumi continued her writing fearlessly and created tens of literature pieces despite of people’s critics. Contained general subject matters, the novels described actual flesh and blood through her realistic writing skill and through her highlight arrangement to elicit the subject matters. Deriving from her inclination of criticizing toward conventionality and of sympathizing with the feminisms, Ssetoutiharumi considered women should not only be unique but also be a whole one, and should establish their own vivid female image through efforts.
The purpose of this paper is trying to link with Ssetoutiharumi’s abundant life experiences, to explore the subtext and aesthetic skills which forming her literature pieces, and to discover Ssetoutiharumi’s attitude and ideology toward life during each of her production period. Through her subtle rhetoric, Ssetoutiharumi’s articles triggering readers’ heartstrings, aroused people’s great echoes, and impregnated the modern Japanese woman literature with new concepts of strength.
