The study aimed to develop a Multimedia English Test for EFL Children (METEC).The implementation of the test consists of function design and item design.
Functions of METEC include interface, testing process, browse and database and server installation. The results of a questionnaire, employed for users to evaluate functions of METEC, indicated functions of METEC were sufficient as a multimedia online English test for children.
The Internal consistency of each METEC subtest was examined with a sample of 732 elementary school students. The alpha coefficients of the listening, reading and writing subtests for the total sample were .962, .860, and .830, respectively.
A test-retest correlation coefficient of .832 was found across an interval of two weeks. These high values for internal consistency and test–retest indicate that the test has acceptable reliability and the similarity of the items within each scale.
As for validity, the correlation coefficient between TASA and METEC scores was .863; therefore, the criterion-related validity was satisfactory. Furthermore, fifteen factors were extracted. Specifically, in the listening section four factors were extracted; Sentence Understanding (L1), Word Recognition (L2), Dialogue Comprehension (L3) and Letter Identification (L4). In the reading section five factors were extracted: Sentence Understanding (R1), Word Recognition (R2), Syntax (R3), Short Information Comprehension (R4) and Reading Inference (R5). In the writing section six factors were extracted: Spelling and Translation (W1), Syntax Production (W2), Lowercase Copying (W3), Sentence Copying (W4), Word Copying (W5) and Uppercase Copying (W6). This result basically corresponded to the structure of the test, which showed that construct validity was acceptable.
Based on the functions, reliability and validity examine, the Multimedia English Test for EFL Children is a reliable and valid online English test for children.
