Abstract
This research was designed to investigate the evolution and connotations of gender education since retrocession of Taiwan 70 years ago. With efforts put on gender education from government departments, private sectors and educational institutions in various stages, historical imagery of promotion and development on gender education are expected to be outlined from 1945 to 2015.
To explore the evolution and connotations of gender education, the interaction between event protagonist and historical status were depicted with the approach of Annales School of historical research perspective which also outlined phases of promoting gender education.
Based on the research on promotion and evolution of gender education since the retrocession of Taiwan, preliminary results of three phases were obtained: the first phase “propagation of physiology education”, the second phase “breaking psychological stereotyped myth” and the third phase “cultural attainment transformation”;
There were three “driving forces” promoting gender education; government departments, civil society organizations and educational institutions, all linked to each other and interact with fluctuation. The first phase of “dissemination of physiological knowledge” was deployed from 1945 to 1980 with full support by the government-led birth control programming movement as the main force, civil society organizations and educational institutions were with the implementation;
The second phase “breaking psychological stereotyped myth” rose along with rapid development of private social organizations after lifting of martial law from 1980 to 2004 leading the concept of advocacy and legislation and gradually become the dominant force as government departments and educational institutions coordinated.
The third period “cultural attainment transformation” came in from 2004 to 2015, with non-governmental organizations promoting concept of gender pluralism with legislation to protect interests of minor gender groups while government departments and educational institutions also corresponded properly;
As concluding with “Promoting connotations” perspective, there were three phases of first “sexual education”, second “bisexual education” and third “gender education”;
The study suggested that gender-related vulnerable or minority groups, such as gay, single foreign immigrants and other vulnerable persons still through legislation to safeguard their basic human rights; another about the future direction of research, it is recommended that the study focused on the theme of the Japanese occupation of Taiwan to explore gender promote the development of education, that the time context of a more complete.
