Back in the 1950’s, there were many industrial robots, the kind of robots that do not have a human-like face or legs, and do not bear any resemblance to humans. Since then many human-like robots have been developed and incrementally improved. The Industrial Revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries was a quantum leap forward for human development. People used to read newspapers to get the most up to date news, or read books to get information on various topics. Nowadays when in need of information people turn to Google, Wikipedia, TedTalk and even online forums. With the development of modern technologies, more machines are programmed not only to respond to us as a human would, such as iPhone Siri and Google Now, but also to fulfil even the most specific human needs. Both app functions recognize human spoken words, interpret their meanings, and react to the meaning accordingly. Technology has become so advanced that it enables computers to respond directly to a wide range of human requests, thus “augmenting the work of highly skilled labor, while allowing some types of jobs to become fully automated” (Frey and Osborne 18). The invention of the internet has made our lives more convenient and connected us to the rest of the world at the click of a button, but the internet has had a massive and sometimes adverse effect on our own behaviors and interactions with each other. I would like to compare and contrast the differences between life with technology and life without technology by closely studying literary works that discuss this subject. I will also endeavor to consult theses which discuss the relationship that humans have with technology. I would like to discuss, how technology has been developed, and how it has, ironically, caused humans to act more and more like robots. There are moments when we are struck by a feeling of strangeness, as if there is something wrong with people, things or events around us, this feeling is “uncanniness”. We feel that because of the rapid development of technology, there is a dimension of human existence that is un-synchronized, unstable – unheimlich. I would like to use seven films to illustrate the uncanny in our lives and how this eeriness is in fact ordinary.
